THIS QUARTER'S SELECTION
This pack includes a white wine from Portugal, 4 red wines (from Spain, France, and Italy, including a bottle of 2019 Due Santi Rosso), and 1 bottle of Due Santi Rosato.
Blend: Loureiro, Alvarinho
We just spent some time working near this producer on Portugal’s Atlantic Coast. You may not know the wines from this area, but you will in the coming years. I would argue there are few other wine-producing areas on earth making better wine for the money (perhaps none). The wine is bright, both in color and freshness. It is zingy and yet somehow still has a softness that belies the high acid. It is as if your favorite Pinot Grigio put on some weight and grew up bigger, stronger, and somehow more elegant. I would drink this all day with sushi, shrimp tacos, and life.
Blend: Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon
In my recent travels to Spain, I was re-introduced to the brilliance of wines from the Ribera del Duero. Tempranillo may be more closely associated with Rioja, but I would argue that “down by the river” is where it shines more beautifully. Rich and without all the sappy oak, this wine is ideal for anything that comes off your grill. This is likely to live in our catalog for a very long time. I think this may be among the best wine for the end of 2022.
Blend: 100% Mataró (Mourvèdre)
I spent some time at this winery last November and came away amazed at what they do. Madia is typically a female’s name in Italy. In this case, it is a very cool red wine’s name. As you might expect from Abruzzo, this wine is ripe, easy-going, pairs all day with pasta sauces (especially the red kind), and just gives and gives with a richness that suggests something finer. Like every wine in this club selection, it punches above its weight class. Invite Madia for a drink. It will be a good date.
Due Santi Rosso 2019 is the beneficiary of perfect weather and a superb growing season in the spring and summer of 2019. The final product is a wine with extraordinary character, complexity, and sense of command. It is deep purple in color and rich and satisfying in taste. On the nose, there are complex and seductive hints of dark-blooded forest fruits, just enough but not too much leather, and then a hint of smokey wood aromas from our newly-acquired casks. For our Cabernet Sauvignon lovers, this year’s DSR gives you more to enjoy than in past vintages, in effect elevating the smoothness of the Merlot with some pleasant action and indeed transgression on the part of its Cab Sav counterpart. Weighing it at 13% alcohol, this wine is generous to the final drop.
Blend: 100% Merlot
This stands up to some of the best rosé wines on the market. Our little Merlot movie star pink wine is for those that know the reward in beginning an evening with a soft touch. But definitely want to transition into red. This wine when taken from cold to cool in 30-40 minutes becomes so many delightful things. However, with that hint of volcanic soil and the freshness of red berries we always know it is Due Santi. Our best vintage yet.
